AITHM and DTHM ECR Researchers are invited to a free Media Training workshop.
With an introduction to the media, the session is tailored specifically to health and medical researchers and the importance of communicating outcomes/findings through media channels.
ECRs will develop an understanding of the media, its different types and requirements. They will develop an understanding of what the media wants from them, and how best to work with their communications teams and journalists to sell their key messages. They will also learn how best to work with their communications teams to ensure targeted, timely, strategic communications.
Topics include:
- Why scientists need the media
- What the media needs from scientists
- Getting to know the media – radio, tv, print, and social
- Delivering strategic communications and key messaging
The second half of the session will focus on ‘The Interview’, including tips and tricks for handling different forms of interviews. Participants to practice interviews under trainer guidance.
Topics include:
- Interview preparation
- Developing key messages
- Anticipating questions and the ‘get out of jail free’ card
- Presentation styles
- Combatting nerves
This session, designed specifically for early career researchers will focus on how to establish and build a media profile along with aligning media engagement with AITHM's strategic interests.
About the presenter
Eleanor Gregory is a media and communications specialist with more than 20 years’ experience in the sector. She has worked as a communications manager in the public and university sectors, and as a senior TV and radio news journalist, presenter and producer with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, including a number of years working as a federal political reporter in the Canberra Press Gallery. She is also a former manager of the ABC in North Queensland. Eleanor has worked as a consultant media trainer across the business and higher education sectors, taught journalism at the University of Canberra and was an ABV TV news trainer and cadet mentor. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economic History from The Australian National University, and a Graduate Diploma in Psychology from Charles Darwin University.
